"I ENJOY BEING ABLE TO HELP TELL A STORY THE MOST AS A PHOTOGRAPHER."

Ally Baird: What inspired you to get into Photography?

Kayla Powers: I have a lot of activity going on inside of me. I just needed to find a platform to manifest how I feel and what I see and the camera allowed me to do so.

Ally Baird: What do you consider your style of Photography?

Kayla Powers: I would consider it a mix of Afrofuturism and some Realism.

Ally Baird: What has been your proudest achievement thus far? How was that experience?

Kayla Powers:  A few summers ago I did a video shoot for Early Mac,  he’s like Big Sean’s right-hand mans. It was a fun experience even though It was on the spot I didn’t I even know I was going to be shooting for him. I really just so happen to have my equipment in my backseat.

Ally Baird: Do you ever get stuck in a rut? If so what are some things you do to push through it?

Kayla Powers: Yes, I do, but it comes with the territory. I go out and explore. Whether that be just taking a drive around the city or actually traveling somewhere... When my being is able to flow freely I'm able to get completely introspective and pull inspiration from that.

Ally Baird: What are some of your goals pertaining to photography?

Kayla Powers: To get really secured in a style, like right now I want to find the style that defines my type of feeling and my type of vibe.

Ally Baird: What's your favorite photo and why?

Kayla Powers: My favorite photos are from my Black Girl Fly series. The Black woman is God and I want my art to reflect that ideology.

Kayla Powers: I want to move to L.A or New York and I hope to have a full length featured film done before I turn 25.

Ally Baird: What is your advice to the younger creatives?

Kayla Powers: Start now. Whatever it is, however you have to do it, do it. You'll miss out on what the world has in store for you if you're always waiting for the perfect moment. Life is about living, creation, and ascension. Let your art do that for you.
